He then left Nigeria on a scholarship to attend Indiana University in Terre Haute, Indiana, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Technology and a Master of Science in Industrial Technology.

Sule returned to Nigeria in 1985 to work as a youth corps member for the Plateau Utilities Board.
In 1985, he was hired as a Production Engineer at the Jos Steel Rolling Mill.
After returning to the United States in 1989, he worked for a number of companies (including Lancer Corporation, OEM component, and Osyka Corporation) before returning to Nigeria in 2000.
When he returned to Nigeria, he co-founded and became the managing director/CEO of Sadiq Petroleum Nigeria Limited in Lagos.
Under his leadership, the company was successful in its bid to acquire African Petroleum (AP) Plc, and he was appointed CEO of AP in 2001.
Prior to his gubernatorial bid in 2018, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc. named Abdullahi Sule as the Company’s substantive Group Managing Director (GMD) on June 21.
On October 1, 2018, he won the All Progressive Congress gubernatorial primaries in Nasarawa State.
Engineer Abdullahi Sule was declared the Governor-elect of Nasarawa State on March 10, 2019, following the March 9, 2019, Nasarawa gubernatorial election.
On May 29, 2019, he was sworn in as governor of Nasarawa State.

The declaration was made on Monday in Lafia at the Nasarawa State Collation Center by Prof. Ishaya Tanko, INEC’s State Collation Officer and Returning Officer.
The candidate for the APC received 347, 209 votes overall, defeating David Ombugadu, a candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who received 283, 016 votes, according to the INEC returning officer.
