Tokyo Olympics President Yoshiro Mori is said to resign on Friday as Tokyo Olympics organization committee president.
His resignation move was due to a sexist comment he made a week ago amidst an ensuing rare public debate in Japan on gender equality.
Yoshiro’s fate would be decided, and the final decision would be announced on Friday. The board of executive and other officials of the Tokyo’s Olympics tournament is predominantly male.
More than a week ago, the Tokyo Olympics president, during a meeting with the Japanese Olympic Committee, asserts that women ”talk too much” and are often driven by a ”strong sense of rivalry”.
The 83-year-old comment was reported; he gave a grudging apology but later decided to resign.
Yoshiro’s comment has shown that Japan is lagging behind other advanced nations to place and allow women to exercise their right to participate equitably in politics and be appointed as board members.
Japan is ranked as the 121st country among the 153 in the World Economic Forum’s gender equality rankings.
Aside from Moris’s comment, which has posed a threat to the opening of the Olympics on the 23rd of June, the game organizers are already facing the risky decision to open the Olympics, which would feature over 11,000 athletes and up to 4,400 Paralympic athletes in the middle of a pandemic.
Well, over 80 percent of Japanese public recent polls result have voted for the postponement or cancellation of the event.
