Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, has promised that he will not allow the academic staffs union of universities linger strike for as long as it did.
The minister made this known during his appearance at Channels TV, where he revealed his children are also in Nigerian public universities hence the reason why he won’t allow such to repeat himself again.
”I won’t give ASUU opportunity to go on strike again. I would not because I have three biological children who suffered from the lingering strike. I also have about fifteen people who are on my scholarship in Nigerian universities. My three biological children are here in Nigerian universities even though two of them have American citizenship, and can go to America to enjoy free education. I am committed, even more than some of the ASUU members.”he said
Kemi Filani News the president of the Academic Staff Union, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi of University has on Wednesday, suspended its ongoing industrial action that started since March 2020.
Biodun Ogunyemi, made this known during a briefing of the union in Abuja.
Ogunyemi also said the lecturers commiserated with students who were also their children, adding that “no amount of sacrifice would be too much to get the matter resolved as long as the government is consistent with its commitments.”
While warning that the union would return to strike without notice if the government disappoints in meeting its part of the agreement reached with the versity lecturers, Ogunyemi noted that the reopening of the schools, considering the COVID-19 pandemic, lies with the Federal Government and Senate.
