In honor of Diego Maradona, Napoli is set to rename their home Stadio San Paolo, following the death of the Argentine at the age of 60.
During a seven-year stay, Maradona became a hero in Naples after joining Barcelona in 1984, guiding the team through their first two Serie A titles.
Political tensions between the northern and southern regions of Italy were at their height during Maradona’s tenure at the club, and there were famously divided loyalties among some Neapolitans when Italy met Argentina in the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup at San Paolo.
To this day, street art representations and sculptures of Maradona can even be found in Naples, while dozens assembled outside San Paolo on Wednesday night to pay homage to their icon.
