Formal Local government chairman bags 31 year jail term for N97m fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Gombe zonal office, has achieved the conviction of Samuel Bulus Adamu before Justice N. I .Afolabi of Federal High Court Gombe state.

A report from the agency says Adamu, an ex-Chairman of Shongom Local Government Area of Gombe State, was first charged on March 9, 2015, on a seven-count charge bordering on the scam, deception and money laundering to the tune of N97, 640, 000.00k( Ninety-Seven Million, Six Hundred and Forty Thousand Naira only).

When the charges were read to him, he responded “not guilty” to them, thus aiding the EFCC to prosecute him for more than five years.

During the trial, prosecution lawyers, A. M. Labaran and A. Y Muntaka called four witnesses and presented several shows, to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

In its verdict delivered on Thursday, July 23, 2020, Justice Afolabi found Adamu guilty of all the seven-count charges. He sentenced to five years imprisonment on counts 1, 2 and 4 without an option of fine. 

On count 3, the court convicted him to seven years imprisonment without an option of fine and on counts 5, 6 and 7, the court convicted him to 3 years imprisonment each without an option of fine.
