Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani has recounted how the whole of Nigeria was held glued to their TV sets during a 1980 AFCON final.
The game was between the Green Eagles of Nigeria and Algeria after democracy returned to Nigeria.
According to Shehu Sani, the Green Eagles ensured they won the match as a gift for Nigeria which just witnessed the return of democracy.
He wrote: ” On this day in 1980 we were glued to our TVs and Radios,watching or listening to the Green Eagles AFCON final against the Algerian National team.It was an unforgettable moment in the history of our country.It was a gift of democracy.The Eagles won.
Its the 40th anniversary;We pay a glowing tribute to those patriots who made our country proud.Earlier today I called Segun Odegbami,Felix Owolabi,Shafiu Muhammed and the widow of Best Ogedengbe to express appreciation.And for the players who died,May their souls Rest In Peace.
