Men of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) in the Oleh Divisional Police Station, Thursday mercilessly molested, handcuffed and locked up a young farmer, Victory Ovririe, for merely trying to supply eggs from his family owned poultry farm to a customer that placed an order as well as buy cooking gas. “When I got to yanga market, the police double-crossed my vehicle and they jumped into my car in a commando style, saying I should follow them to the station. I simply explained myself to them and showed them the eggs I was conveying for supply as a farmer just to prove that I meant no harm. Unfortunately for me, l was talking to the wrong guys.
IT COULD BE ANYONE! JUSTICE MUST PREVAIL 😡😡😡 please tag ANYONE!!”When I got to yanga market, the police double-crossed my vehicle and they jumped into my car in a commando style, saying I should follow them to the station. I simply explained myself to them and showed them the eggs I was conveying for supply as a farmer just to prove that I meant no harm. Unfortunately for me, l was talking to the wrong guys. The Police handcuffed my hand against the 5kg gas cylinder that was at the front of the vehicle. They descended on me and beat me to stupor. At a point, I started coughing out blood with my face swollen and eyes bloody. I was nearly killed. “They later threw me into their vehicle, took me to the station and locked me up in one dark room. Before then they took my phone and ordered me to unlock it for them so it can be searched. They didn’t even allow me to write a statement. They just wrote whatever suited their imagination for me. One of the officers, Sergeant Omonigho who took me to the dark room, handcuffed my two hands behind and continued beating me. He used my face to hit table with several punches following. It was hell. “When my family heard about the unfortunate incident, they came for me at the station and met the Divisional Police Officer for my release. “To our greatest surprise, the DPO said I should have followed the police to the station at once without explaining myself because some police would have chosen to take me to the bush and be dealt with there. As you can see, I am still coughing blood,” Ovririe said.
The Delta State government had extended the lockdown in the State for another 14 days and imposed a dusk to dawn curfew from 7pm to 7am. The government however, said food sellers and those rendering essential services can still do business during the day.
While lamenting before our correspondent, the mother of the victim, Dame (Mrs) Rose Ovririe said, “I wept when I saw my son yesterday. He was treated like a common criminal and beaten blue-black. An innocent boy that was on an errand for his father with proves to show, was nearly killed by the Police. I have reported the matter to the Nigeria Barr Association (NBA), Oleh Branch.”
