Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Poly Unwana chapter, has embarked an indefinite strike.
This is attributed to the nonpayment of Peculiar Academic Allowance (PAA) for 27 months by the school management.
The strike decision was taken few days ago after one of her members, Dr John Ibiam moved the motion, regardless of the Rector, Ven Ibe Enwo’s pleas.
Enwo had promised to pay that of one month out of the 27 months owed, but the union members refused.
35 members out of 37, casted a vote in favour of the strike.
In a message sent out, the publicity secretary of the union confirmed the decision to kick off the strike.
He wrote: “I’m directed to inform all members that ASUP in congress has declared an indefinite strike. This is sequel to the inability of mgt to offset the 27months of PAA owed staff.
Consequently, all academic activities are hereby withdrawn pending when all our agitations are fully met by mgt. Ukegbu C.C Pub Sec.”
The strike started 1st August, while academic staff were advised not to engage in any academic activities including: lectures, project/seminar supervision, departmental/academic board meeting and more.
