Former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has stated that the June 12 Democracy Day honor of late MKO Abiola was done by President Buhari to shame former president Olusegun Obasanjo.
Last year, President Buhari declared that Democracy Day would no longer be celebrated on May 29 which usually coincided with presidential and governorship inauguration day.
The new date announced for the celebration of Democracy Day was announced as June 12 to honor late MKO Abiola.
The maiden celebration took place yesterday, June 12, 2019, with dignitaries from far and wide converging at the Eagles Square in Abuja.
In reaction to the celebration, Fayose commended President Buhari for honoring MKO Abiola. He, however, stated that it was a shame that Obasanjo, who was a major beneficiary of Democracy brought about by the June 12 struggle which Abiola paid for with his life, failed to honor him with the declaration done by Buhari.
He tweeted:
“Honouring MKO Abiola by President Buhari is to Obasanjo’s shame. It remains a sore-point of his political history that because of ego, Obasanjo, who’s the greatest beneficiary of the June 12, 1993 struggle failed to honour his kinsman, MKO Abiola. So, I commend President Buhari.”
