President Muhammadu Buhari has nominated Godwin Emefiele for second term as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
President Buhari has now written to the Senate to seek approval from the legislature for another tenure for Emefiele, whose tenure empires on June 2, 2019.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki read the reappointment nomination letter during Thursday plenary. The President in the letter, urged the Senate to consider Emefiele’s reappointment having completed his first term in office.
This step by Buhari is the first time since 1999, when Nigeria returned to democracy, that anyone would be nominated to serve two terms as CBN governor. Godwin was first appointed in 2014 by former president Goodluck Jonathan and was retained when Buhari came to office in 2015.
If Godwin Emefiele’s nomination is approved by the Senate, His five-year tenure will end in 2024 after a new president is elected in 2023.
