Celebrity police woman, Dolapo Badmus has advised Nigerian schools to ensure that when their pupils dress up for halloween, their costumes depict our culture.
This she said in an Instagram post where she revealed that she will dress her kids up as Eyo for next year’s halloween.
She wrote:
SCHOOLS SHOULD MAKE PUPILS/STUDENTS DRESS IN COSTUMES OF THE MASQUERADES OF THEIR PLACES OF ORIGIN, THAT IS OUR OWN HALLOWEEN! What is this razzmatazz about Halloween stuffs and whatever?! Even schools are forcing kids to dress up Halloween way to celebrate in schools! Must we always copy the white people and sacrifice even our own identity on the altar of wanting to be Oyinbo like?! To such an extent that anyone that upholds our culture will be tagged “Evil”! Are we for real?! We are a people of culture and traditions, how can we follow “Oyinbo” blindly to extent of demonizing our own culture! If we don’t know, the whole world is tilting toward developing their GDP through tourism and we as a people should do much to tow that line because with shale oil taking over crude oil (our major source of revenue) and manufacturers coming up with Electric cars….we might get lost in between! Let’s stick to our identity please. No school abroad will encourage its students to adorn Eyo or ahickwu Ocha costume to celebrate Halloween. We all should know that in promoting our culture and tradition, we develop our tourist potentials and create more job opportunities that will invariably improve our productivity and increase our Internally Generated Revenue which will lessen poverty thereby reducing criminality. My Children’s School should note that I’m dressing them up as EYO next year?
