The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced on an indefinite nationwide strike with immediate effect.
ASUU arrived at the decision at the end of an emergency meeting on Sunday night at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) in Ondo State.
ASUU president, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, said the strike will be total and commence with immediate effect.
The reason behind the strike has to do with the failure on the side of the government to honour the memorandum of action signed between the union and the federal government in 2017.
He also mentioned that renegotiation with ASUU which the government intentionally ignored with impunity was part of the reasons for the strike.
Professor Ogunyemi therefore directed all the state chapters to ensure full compliance until their demands are met.
