David De Gea becomes 1st goalkeeper to make least saves at a world cup

David De Gea has become the first goalkeeper since 1966 to have made the least number of saves in three games at the World Cup.

The 27-year-old Manchester United goalkeeper wasn’t impressive for the Spanish national team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia having made just one save from the seven shots on goal.

In their opening Group B encounter against Portugal, De Gea couldn’t save any of Crisitiano Ronaldo’s three shots on target, with the second one slipping off his hands. However, La Furia Roja were eliminated by the host country Russia on penalties in the round of 16 on Sunday, July 1.

The Red Devils’ keeper was unable to save any of the Russians penalties while Igor Akinfeev saved Koke’s penalty.

According to Spanish news outlet, Marca reports that De Gea made his first stop against Morocco in the final group stage game, the opponents shot three times and scored two goals. He did make a block when one-on-one with Khalid Boutaib.

However, Argentine football legend, Diego Maradona believes David De Gea is still a good goalkeeper and that what we saw as his performance in Russia was just the poor part of him.

Asked about the goalkeeper’s performance, Maradona said, “Yes, I like him, although he’s conceded a couple of goals.

“We all saw the mistake, but since I’ve seen him join Manchester United, he’s had a very good career,’ he told Spanish outlet Marca.

“He’s done well to ensure that Sergio Romero is always a substitute, his position is never in doubt.

“He’s started this World Cup in a negative way. I’ve met him with [Sergio] Aguero when they were at Atletico Madrid and people in Spain need to be patient with him.”
