New Democracy day: Why there will be no public holiday on June 12 this year

Contrary to what most Nigerians are expecting, there will be no public holiday on June 12 this year, despite President Muhammadu’s announcement on Wednesday.

Buhari, in a press release, moved Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12.

The president also announced that MKO Abiola, winner of the annulled election, will be posthumously awarded the highest honour in the land, GCFR.

However, part of the statement read: “The investiture will take place on Tuesday June 12th, 2018, a date which in future years will replace May 29th as a National Public Holiday in celebration of Nigeria Democracy Day.”

A source around the presidency confirmed that the date will be a public holiday in future years, but not in 2018.

“It starts from next year,” the source simply said.

He also insisted that May 29 remains the handover/swearing-in day and Buhari is not planning to extend his stay in office by two weeks, in the eventuality he loses next year’s elections.

June 12: House of Reps in rowdy session over Buhari’s new Democracy Day

The House of Representatives is presently in rowdy session over President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day.

Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, is, however, trying to keep the angry members under control as the debate on the new Democracy Day continues.

Recall that Buhari, in a statement issued yesterday, had declared Abiola as the winner of the annulled June 12 election and replacing May 29 with June 12 as the new Democracy Day.

Buhari had argued that June 12, 1993, the date of the election considered to be the fairest in Nigeria’s history, “was far more symbolic of democracy in the Nigerian context than May 29 or even October 1”.
