KFB Foodie Talk: 10 Stews & Sauces without Tomatoes

 For our newbies, the KFB foodie talk column – handled by Dobby of Dobbysignature – is basically for ladies and ‘guys’ that are interested in learning how to cook better ;).

Today she discusses 10 stews and sauces without Tomatoes.

Tomato is
undoubtedly the most popular base used in the preparation of some of the
best meals here in Nigeria especially when it comes to making a tasty
and decent stew. But quite recently, due to the sudden rise in the price
of tomato, it’s use has been cut down drastically to save cost in most
homes. So instead of spending twice the amount you’d spend normally on
tomatoes, i’ve compiled a list of stews, soups and sauces which do not
require tomatoes. Without further ado…here’s the list


What makes this
particular gravy recipe unique is the combination of colored vegetables
added to it giving it that wonderfully unique aroma, color and taste. 
With palm nut as the major ingredient, this native soup doubles as a soup for swallow and also stew for rice.
Just one taste and you’re hooked. designer stew needs no introduction and it definitely requires no tomato.
All you need for this is cat fish, herbs and spices and you’re good to go. Can be used for rice, eko/agidi or taken alone.
As the name implies, this tasty sauce is palm oil based. It goes perfectly with yam, beans e.t.c
Don’t let the
color fool you. There’s not a single tomato in this popular stew. just
like it’s counterpart “Ayamase” above, you just need a combination of
red peppers for this and you’re good to go.
You just can’t get enough of Ugba sauce once it’s served and like Oliver twist the fam would always ask for more. 
Obe ata din din
is a popular peppered dipping stew which is mostly sold in local
restaurants or roadside food kiosks alongside fried plantain, fried yam,
roasted plantain/yam (boli) and a host of others. 
According to
research, raw garden egg is a very good source of dietary fiber,
manganese, potassium, copper and thiamin (vitamin B1). It is also a good
source of vitamin B6, folate, magnesium and niacin. It is also
effective in weightloss, lowering blood cholesterol and eye pressure in
