EFCC Arrests ex-Adamawa Governor Bala Ngilari over N450m Election Fund

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on
Thursday arrested the immediate past governor of Adamawa state, Mr Bala
Ngilari for his alleged role in the distribution of the sum of N450
million diverted to the state for the failed re-election bid of former
President Goodluck Jonathan.
According to Premium Times, Mr Ngillari is being detained at the Gombe zonal office of the EFCC.
The former governor is said to have been implicated by a former
Nigerian ambassador to the United States, Mr Hassan Adamu, who was
earlier quizzed by EFCC officials.
Adamu reportedly told the anti-graft agency that when the chairman of
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa state, Joel Madaki, and
himself (Adamu) took custody of the money from Fidelity Bank, it was
taken to the government House in bullion vans by officials of the bank.
Mr Adamu also told investigators that Alhaji Hamman, the chief of
staff to ex-Governor Ngilari at the time, and Aisha Waziri, the
accountant to the government house, counted the money and confirmed the
figure.
“The duo became custodians of the fund based on the directive of their boss, the governor,” Adamu reportedly told EFCC.
Adamu also said he left after the government officials took custody
of the fund and did not know how the money was shared, and did not
personally benefit from it.
An official of the EFCC stated that the former Adamawa governor has
denied authorising his former aides to take custody of the election fund
believed to have been diverted from federal government coffers.
A detention order had earlier been signed and most likely, he would spend the night in EFCC custody,” the EFCC source said.

Bauchi State Government Releases Statement Explaining N20m Cash in Commissioner’s Office

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Communications to
Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar of Bauchi State, Shamsuddeen Lukman
Abubakar, the viral pictures of the stacks of cash found in the office
of a commissioner has been explained.
Shamsuddeen explained that the money in the picture which has been
trending on social media and believed to be about N20m was neither an
illegal transaction nor a money laundering attempt but in fact a
benevolent act of the state as it was set aside to be disbursed to
various mosques for feeding during the ongoing Ramadan. It was presented
by Commissioner Abdullah Mohammed Idris to the people on Wednesday, 15
June, on behalf of the state governor.
The statement obtained from LIB reads:
“Good evening to the good people of Bauchi state. It has come to
my attention, the circulation of certain photographs online of money
found on the table of a serving Commissioner of Bauchi state. I wish to
assure you all that, the said picture is no implication of corruption or
illegal money transactions.

This period of Ramadan teaches us to extend love to the poor, less
privileged and the non buoyant. In line with this, and as has always
been done, the Bauchi State Government releases funds to mosques in
Bauchi state for the provision of iftar to faithfuls. These funds are
disbursed through the Office of the Commissioner for Religious Affairs,
to assist faithfuls who are not buoyant enough to afford iftar.

“Once again, we understand the insensitivity of the image,
surfacing at a time like this when we as a Government are working hard
to achieve a corruption-free and transparent administration.

We want to assure the good people of Bauchi state that all and
sundry is being done to make the best use of resources, fight corruption
within the State and ensure that all our promises to the people are
fully delivered”.

May Allah crown our efforts with success.
